Applying Phonics Teaching and Mind Mapping on English Vocabulary Learning: A Case Study of a Junior High School Student with Mild Intellectual Disability

The study aims to explore the application of phonics teaching and min mapping in learning English vocabulary on a junior high student with intellectual disability. By practicing the teaching model, the researcher hoped to have a better understanding of student’s learning effects after the instruction. Meanwhile the researcher experienced the challenges and professional growth during the research. At the end, some suggestions for other teachers and studies were provided. The study used a mixed method by both quantitative and qualitative methods. The subject of the study was a seventh grader in a junior high school. Quantitative data was collected from pre-test and post-test on both phonics and vocabulary. Qualitative data was from the student’s mind maps, the participants’ questionnaires, interview, and instructor’s class observations. The result of the study is as follows: 1. The effect of applying phonics teaching on learning English vocabulary for a junior high school student with intellectual disability was positive effect. 2. The effect of applying mind mapping on learning English vocabulary for a junior high school student with intellectual disability is positive effect. 3. The student’s motivation and learning attitude after the experimental teaching were positive also. 4. The student’s overall progress after phonics teaching and mind mapping was positive. Based on the research, the following suggestion were proposed: 1. Encourage disabled students develop advantages and apply in learning. 2. Encourage disabled students establish learning skill as early as possible. 3. Proper compliment to disabled students. 4. Applying multiple and flexible assessment methods on disabled students.
