Popis: | 104 This thesis is primarily a comparative study of Robert James Waller’s The Bridges of Madison County from the perspective of the novel and the film. It demonstrates that the novel and the film, though different in media, succeed in showing their respective excellence in the media required of them, each illuminating and complementing the other. As far as structure is concerned, the novel presents a striking contrast to the film. The novel is characterized by temporal extension and spatial expansion which we can discern through imagination and association, two paramount properties of a written language. On the other hand, the film adapted from the novel is confined to and structured in a frame of “play within play.” Through the responses from Michael and Carolyn we can find a current of ascending order, and witness the gradual process of their moving from misunderstanding to understanding their mother’s greatness. In addition to the artistic treatment, topics regarding shift of voice right, and allegorical techniques are also included in this discussion. In short, the novel and the film actually illuminate and complement each other, enhancing our understanding of this love story. |
