How to properly disposal the low level radioactive waste (LLW Radwaste) is an important issue in Taiwan. Deep geological disposal is one of the LLW Radwaste treatments considered for Taiwan. The LLW Radwaste repository requires general characteristics of engineering barrier as well as functions of sea water intruding resistance and radionuclides retarding to the biosphere. Since zeolite has known to be a good adsorbate, this study added the zeolite to the concrete and morta samples to examine its effect on resisting the salt solutions. This experiment attempts to simulate the scenario if the LLW Radwaste repository would be intruded by sea water. The strength of zeolite concrete and zeolite mortar was also tested to evaluate the influence by the zeolite additives. The results indicated that the salt solutions did deteriorate the strength of the motar samples. Moreover, the zeolite additives could decrease the effect of salt solutions on the zeolite motar samples possibly due to its adsorptive capability. The results also showed that replacing the cement with 4-6% of zeolite in weight can increase the strength of concrete or mortar samples the most. This study not only confirmed the results from previous researches, but provided new findings in the field of LLW Radwaste. This study suggested that the retarding effect of radionuclides’ migration by adding zeolite to the concrete and/or motar samples should be tested in the future in order to complete a comprehensive evaluation of engineering materials for the LLW Radwaste repository.
