The influence of shape on product preferences is a very important topic in the design field, yet there are few studies to explore the causality of user's emotional response to feeling the shapes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of different curvatures on users’ emotional responses. To measure respondents’ psychological and physiological responses to the four different curvatures, this study applied two kinds of emotional assessment methods, which are emotional dimension scales and event-related potentials. The result shows that respondents do have more intense emotional responses to those shapes with curvatures, and a greater curvature caused a more intense response. However, there is a critical point of which an excessive increase in the curvature brings to a negative emotion. This study presents subjective and objective evidence to show the relationship between the change in curvature of product shapes and the emotional reactions triggered by feeling the grip; thereby hoping to provide a reference for future designs of product shape regarding grip feeling.
