With the demand for 4K high-quality images, larger screen size requirement, coupled with the necessity of energy saving and cost down, while without changing the basic structure of the BLU, enhancing the overall brightness of the backlight module and uniformity are the focus of this research. This research first uses optical software to simulate the best optical light guide with micro V-groove structure. Then it is compared with single sided pattern LGP to discover the best V-groove. Actual LGP is then produced and paralleled with the simulation for further analysis. As simulation for large screen models are more time consuming, we first constructed 5-inch BLU module to analyze the optical trends of different angles of micro V-groove structures to locate the best simulation conditions. According to the simulated conditions, 50-inch LGP were produced. Single-sided and double-sided microstructure light guide plates were taken for analysis and the results were validated. The production method chosen for LGP was extrusion. This method uses rollers to inscribe microstructures directly onto the surface of the LGP while the plastic is being squeezed out. With the addition of micro V-groove structure to the light exit side of the LGP, this research aims to increase the light efficiency by converging and reusing the remaining light energy under a constant light source.
