A study of IEEE 802.21 Information service based strategy in Access Network Selection

As wireless network technology advances, many heterogeneous wireless networks, such as WiFi, UMTS,WiMAX and LTE, have been deployed on the world. These wireless networks form a heterogeneous network environment and provide ubiquitous services to users. Now a day, many users can already use their handsets with various network interface cards (NICs) to access wireless networks at any time and any place. To better exploiting the resource and convenience of the heterogeneous wireless networks, it is of no surprise that many handsets already provide multi-mode NICs。 In multimode communications, network selection and handoff timing have great impact on service quality. In the past, many researches make use of local information, such as Receive Signal Strength (RSS) and network type, collected by a handset to select an access network. Thus, they are not able to select an optimal network based on user preference over overall network environment. This thesis proposed a hypbrid network selection and handoff algorithm called PNS (Profile-based Network Selection). PNS selects a network based on the information services provided by IEEE802.11. PNS uses PLA (Packet Loss Aware) and AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) algorithms at different occasions to ensure connection quality and choose a network satisfying user preference. Experiment results show that PNS can indeed obtain a better connection quality while choosing a network fulfilling user’s preference.
