Due to the advent of an aging society, the proportion of elderly population is increasing year by year. Thus there are more and more elders living in the care facilities. Since the body health of elders is deteriorating by aging, and the deteriorative situation is different on each individual, some could live independently, the other may need assistive devices to support their daily life. So the research tries to make elders use many different kinds of assistive devices in their daily life and evaluate the care facilities in which they live to decide how barrier free the environments are. By investigating on the environment of three care facilities, and observing the daily life of elders who use assistive devices(stick, four feet turn, mobility aids and wheelchair) in them, we can know whether the barrier free environment of these facilities could give the substantial assistance to elders who use assistive devices in their daily life or not. After the investigation and analysis, we can point out problems and hard situations those elders are facing when using stick, four feet turn, Mobility aids and wheelchair. Also the research discovered that there are some basic requirements such as the corresponding dimension of the space, furniture, and choice of environmental material when using assistive devices. The evaluation show that the environments of, Pau-Kan, Yung Shin, and Pau-Kin, these three care facilities, are not totally barrier free and would interfere the usage of assistive devices in elders daily life, even though they passed the audit of barrier free regulation. Despite of the environment issue, caring behavior would also change the daily behavior of elders who use assistive devices. In conclusion, the construction of real barrier free environment consists not only spatial planning but also many other factors which need to be integrate, such as application of assistive devices, choice of furniture and nurses’ caring method. Only all these factors coordinate with each other, the real barrier free environment can be achieved.
