A Comparative Study of the Science Curriculum Guidelines Between the Elementary Education of Taiwan and America

Popis: | 103 There were two main goals of the study. Firstly, comparing the curricula outlines between Taiwan and America. Secondly, comparing the revision background and content. The researcher conducted a qualitative research on the study. Also the analysis method was applied between Taiwan and America from 1st to 6th grade during the research period. There are some outcomes of the research as follows: Firstly, revision background from: 1. The cause rose from nongovernment appeal; however, Taiwan dominated by the Ministry of Education, America by private joint elaboration of four non-profit organizations. 2. Taiwan emphasized the curriculum should be connected to students’ daily life and taught in inquiry method; America put science and engineering integrated into science education, emphasizing the engineering practice, and etc. Secondly, content and characteristics of science curriculum from: 1. Taiwan emphasized to develop students’ scientific literacy and the materials including knowledge and attitude. 2. Taiwan emphasized to develop students’ interests; however, America emphasized science practices in curricula goals. 3. Taiwan covers physics, chemistry, life science, environment science and information science, but America specifies four disciplinary core ideas (Physical Science, Life Science, Earth and Space Science and Engineering, Technology and Applications of Science). 4. Taiwan suggested that local issues can be put in the materials; America emphasized students should perform core abilities through eight science practices materials. All findings of the research can be used by the science educators, science teachers of elementary schools and the science graduate students in the future. |
