Evaluation of Modern Machine-made Mounts:A Study of Commercial Xuan Paper Board

| Popis: | 103 The most valuable of traditional mounting is that it finished through handmade. Since the 1990s, the idea of the displacement in many kinds of work of human beings by machinery,there was a huge change on traditional mounting,making it had anevolution on making process and the use of materials. Therefore,the modern machined-made mount began to appear. Also, there has a high volume productsmade by modern machined-made mount on market, though it bring more conveniences, the composition and degradation characteristics of the use of materials yet to be assessed. This study takes the most commonly used pieces─commercial xuan paper board─which made by modern machined-made mount, as the object of the research,in order to investigatethe suitability of the materials used in modern machined-made mount. The adhesive of commercial xuan paper board comeposed of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA), commonly known as hot melt adhesives. According to many literature, which is likely to cause the photo-oxidation by light, heat and oxygen, thus causing thedegradation, embrittlement and yellowing of the materials. Through the accelerated aging chambers to simulate the degradation for realizing the effects from adhesives on paper. To analyzethe change of color, physical, chemical properties. The results of experiments and analysis shows that after UV aging, the adhesives penetrate into the paper fibers through electron microscopy, and may cause the color change, the opacity decreased, significantly weakened and acidic pH. To remove EVA frome papers must use organic solvent, but the solvent may cause the worse impact on paper fibers. So it is suggested that the collectioins, which made by modern machined-made mount, are required to store itin a place with stable temperature and humidity and reduce UV radiation, in order to long-term conservation.
