Job Demand, Competence and Burnout among Nurses: the Moderating Role of Emotional Intelligence in the Moderated Mediation Model

The aim of this study is to explore the relationship among job demand (working hours and workload), job competence and job burnout among nurses, as well as to examine the moderating effect of emotional intelligence on the relationships between job competence and job burnout. The study collected data from 884 full-time nurses from academic medical centers, metropolitan hospitals, local community hospitals and their branches in Taiwan. A total of 771 participants returned valid responses making the valid response rate 87%. The results revealed that only workload had positive effect on emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, but had negative effect on nurses’ job competence. Furthermore, job competence was negatively related to exhaustion and played the partially mediated role of the relationship between workload and exhaustion. Finally, the moderated effect could not justify in the moderated mediation model in which nurses at the relationship between job competence and exhaustion.
