Effect of Horticultural Therapy Activities on Environmental Cognition for Children Studying in Special Education Classes in Elementary School

Popis: | 103 Regarding to environmental education for Unsorted Special Education (USE) School curricula, most of studies were focused on the recycling or water conservation and electricity issues. These ways could be unable to further enhance the cognitive ability for children’s on environmental education. Current domestic Horticultural Therapy was applied to physical and mental illness, elderly, mood disorders and soothing bereavement and students’ activities at different levels. Few researcher had discussed with the application of Horticultural Therapy into special education student. Therefore, in this research, innovative curriculum was designed by the combination of horticultural therapy program and activities with Special Education Syllabuses regulated in Environmental Education Curriculum, assuring that the quality of teaching lesson will be improved. for the environmental awareness of disabled children conducted in this research, whole achievements could be referred by educational administration. In this study, six USE students at elementary school, aged from 9 to 11 years old with ability to learn, were observed and recorded during. September 1, 2014 to January 30, 2015 students' ability curriculum design included Horticulture Therapy and Environmental Education with eight units consisted of 24 lessons. Horticulture therapy activities, name as Homeroom time, was arranged to work in back garden belonging to themselves in once or twice days in a week. For the evaluation of learning for USE student, Scale for research project on sulted by The Efficacy of Horticultural Therapy Evaluation Form(Developmental delay)and The Cognitive of Five Senses Evaluation Form were recorded and assessed the variance of cognitive behavior using statistical soft ware analysis. The findings were summarized and stated as the followings. Teaching activities designed by contacting with the plant can attract USE students’ attention. USE Students showed a high repulsion phenomena while their hands or feet touch with soil. Based on Welfare benefits of Checklist of Horticultural therapy compared Pretest with posttest, horticulture therapy program not only displayed a significant effect (p=0.0009<0.001) for students on the perception of environmental cognition, but also improved the sensitivity of USE students to environmental change. |
