Popis: | 103 Less Home is a home video and experimental film in discussion and interpretation of the meaning of “home/family”. The original title,“Li-Xiang”(離鄉), combines the idea of escape(離) and returning home(鄉), which indicates both hesitation and confusion in conflict with defining “home/family”. The English title, “Less Home”, on the other hand indicates the film represents plural yet indecisive meanings of home/family, giving the film in questioning about what home/family is uncompleted with. There are 5 chapters in Less Home. “Puzzles of My Grandma” is about the retrospective of home in the face of my grandma/s death. “Journeys to Home” questions about patriarchy home/family system in visiting an empty traditional Taiwanese ancestral house. “Shadow Journal” reveals about my hidden identity and portraits home/family in gay community. “Dreams about Lumière” notes the contextual images of home/family of the film in conversation with film history. “Lucy and Beyond the Infinite” is to remake and re-create the first 4 chapters in forming a forever searching image of the meaning of home/family. Each chapter independently yet relatively represents the different interpretations in both content and form in representing the plural meanings of home/family. In making Less Home, the idea of form is inspired from the aesthetics of home video and diary film through the techniques from experimental film. The film uses V8 video camera as the basis and texture of home video, unlike those of the 8mm or 16mm. Furthermore, Less Home also includes videos made by digital camera and smart phone, which are the popular machines among modern amateur film makers. With the crossover and the hybrid of different textures in content and form, the film is not only to challenge the definition of home video and the meaning of home but also to seek for the method and position in “desolate writing”(based on the idea of the book, Notes of the Desolate Man by Chu T’ien-wen) of film into practice both in film making and creation description writing. |
