An Examination on the Paternalistic Leadership of Business Managers in Taiwan

With the rise of the internet media in modern society, new generation may have different values. The values of the young generation might have been gradually changed to the values of Western-style pluralism. Is Paternalistic leadership style gone with the social change? Do domestic and family businesses still apply paternalistic leadership style to their managements? These questions are the focuses of this study. This study conducted research through questionnaire. The results show that: age, family or non-family business, domestic or non-domestic companies did not reach significant impact on paternalistic leadership, and paternalistic leadership of the family business and domestic companies were also not reach significant impact on the performance of enterprise. In the factor analysis on the paternalistic leadership of this study, we found that the benevolent leadership and moral leadership of the paternalistic leadership are not stable factors, and the construct validity of these two factors are not as good as the authoritarian leadership factor. Therefore, this study changed the variables of paternalistic leadership to the authoritarian leadership; in order to continue testing this research hypothesies. The results showed that “the managers of the family business companies demonstrate more authoritarian leadership behavior than the managers of the non-family business companies”, “the old managers show more authoritarian leadership behavior than the young managers”, “The managers from better performaning companies exhibit more authoritarian leadership than the managers from worse-performaning companies”. Finally, this study discussion and suggestion for the research findings.
