Different from previous studies on English learning motivation which mostly focused on either writing motivation or learning motivation, this study examines the learner’s speaking motivation and learning background. English speaking motivation can be traced back to the learners’ learning background. The learners’ learning background can be classified as follows: their gender, their educational system, their cram school experience and their English proficiency. These four factors would trigger or reduce the learners’ speaking motivation. In this study, the author investigates the relationships of speaking motivation and learning background in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes of university in Taiwan. The participants in this study are from the universities in central Taiwan; they come from different senior high school, vocational high school and comprehensive high school, and the participants include 117 students. Each group is taught by the same teacher in the same university in central Taiwan. The research design is a mixed method of questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was revised by the researcher from “Language Learning Orientations Scale” (Noels, Pelletier, Clement & Vallerand, 2000). After gathering the data, the author would use SPSS to analyze the data and observe the relationships and select the interviewees from each group randomly to access an interview. The results of this study could help teachers to know their students’ English speaking motivation and learning background. According to the results, teachers could adjust their teaching styles, teaching materials, and gain supplementary knowledge to different learning background of students.
