This study focused on a large area of the discharge process, the discharge parameters on the surface properties of the workpiece. Electrode material used in this study is chromium copper, chromium copper electrode due to relatively copper electrode, has a higher material removal rate and the dimensional accuracy during the discharge process, the finished workpiece having a better surface roughness. Workpiece is commonly used mold steel industry, which are SKD11 tool steel and high speed steel powder V4E. Experiment was divided into two parts, the first part of the first electrodes with a diameter of 10mm and V4E SKD11 steel in electric discharge machining to three control factor (discharge sites, resting sites and Z axes fall time) and three levels of Taguchi L9 orthogonal table, find the best roughing discharge parameters. The second part of the first part of the proceeds in accordance with the best discharge parameters, used in large 50mm diameter electrode processing. Finally, the measurement of the workpiece surface roughness and SEM observation of specimens of micro-cracks and white layer thickness. In this study, the successful application of chromium copper electrode pair SKD11 tool steel and tool steel powder V4E large discharge machining. Processing depth 2 mm, surface roughness of Ra = 0.8μm or less, time in less than 10 hours. The average thickness of the white layer SKD11 is 5.25μm, and the average thickness of the white layer V4E of 2.43μm. In addition, we find that the gap value adjustment will affect the crack width and the white layer thickness of the workpiece, the gap value increases, the relative width of the crack-and-white layer thickness decreases.
