An experimental study on characteristics of supply vent of Under-Floor Air Distribution System

This study presents full-size experimental measurements of full-scale air supply vent used in the Under-Floor Air Distribution (UFAD) system. Compared with Ceiling-Based Air Distribution system, UFAD systems is more efficient of utilizing the conditioned air, and improve indoor air quality, thermal comfort and energy performance. This study investigates supply air velocity, supply air flow rate, and supply air direction from the outlet of UFAD system. Experimental results of supply air velocity and supply air flow rate show some variations between them. The results of supply air velocity measurement show that the average velocity distribution at the same level height is uneven. This study uses flow visualization to investigate the supply air flow direction which has an angle to the horizontal. There are three measurement sections of the supply vent, \^{x}_L, \^{x}_C and \^{x}_R with and without diffuser a diffuser on it for three supply options. The supply air direction results show that the supply air from the outlet with a diffuser is tilting by an angle of 85^o ~ 105^o to the floor; the supply air from the outlet without any diffuser is tilting by an angle of 120^o ~ 140^o to the floor. Therefore, supply air angle depends on the design of the plenum and with a diffuser or not. The results of supply air velocity and angle show that the vertical velocity measurement points are not parallel to the supply air flow direction and the velocity magnitude drops significantly outside the supply air flow.
