This research uses finite element induction motor model to investigate the influences of winding type and slot combination on induction motor performance. Based on the results, high efficiency and low vibration induction motor for EV/HEV design is proposed. The harmonic components of air gap magnetic field are mainly caused by winding arrangement and slot combination. This research uses electromagnetic field simulation software Ansoft Maxwell to create induction motor finite element models. The preliminary design determines the motor type and winding type. Harmonics in the air gap, torque ripple and radial magnetic forces that cause vibration are analyzed in order to sort out the best induction motor design. By using low core loss electrical steels and flux barrier design for this induction motor, efficiency higher than conventional materials by 0.5–2.0 % are obtained with identical torque outputs. Finally, from analysis results, this research proposes new motor designs with high efficiency and low vibration for EV/HEV.
