There are many literatures related to food miles issues, such as sustainable development, greenhouse gas, food packaging and support local food, etc. In Taiwan, the prevalence of commercial trade, convenient transportation, and the food we eat is no longer confined to one place and time. Hence, the purpose of this study is to analysis food miles and carbon emissions of the meat that Taiwan imported, and measures the distance and carbon dioxide emissions which generated from producing countries and transport to Taiwan. Meat import data for this study is from Taiwan's international commodity harmonized classification system (The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, referred to as HS) product category as HS02. Detail data first sum up to specific meat group by country in HS 10 digit coding, a total of 10 groups are obtained; secondly calculate delivery distance for each imported country and compute carbon dioxide emissions of imported meat during delivery process. Detailed data incuding the quanitity of imports, import prices, food miles, sea distances, land distances, the ratio of each country’s rails and trucks distance, and carbon dioxide emissions are obtained. Its purpose is to assess the impact on the environment and global warming of the carbon dioxide produced by Taiwan's meat imports during its transport.
