Developing Senior High School Elective Courses in Physical Education Featured Curriculum: A Case Study June, 2015 Chen, Hui Chun Advisor: Keh Nyit Chin, Ph.D. Abstract With the development of Taiwan 12-year basic education, the goals of curriculum guidelines allow both schools and teachers to implement flexible five core capabilities, the content of curricula and class materials, the proportion of teaching time and learning assessment based on the school and student characteristics. School characteristics is the process which school administrators, teachers and students participate together and figure out the appropriate school environment, members, and operation to fulfill the function of school-based featured curriculum more effectively. The purpose of this study was to examine the development of physical education electives courses of the case school, The methods of collecting documents, analyzing and summerizing relevant literature, and interviewing with administrators, teachers and students were used. After the analysis of all data, the results were as follows: 1. The development process: beginning with the Ministry of Education quality program and choosing the key projects, “kendo, fencing, archery,” became the featured curriculum for athletic classes. 2. Barriers and specific solution strategies: The main barrier was the lack of facility which limited the use of time and space in stadium. Owing to the high price, the personal use equipment was not available for students as usual practice. The other obarrier, curriculum planning, faced the problems of academic pressure and non-entrance examination subjects. The specific solution strategy of the lacking facility was to adjust the usable site by the instructors themselves and waited for the construction of the professional classroom for phyical education elective courses in the branch campus. As for the specific solution strategy of curriculum planning, physical featured curriculum is adjusted to provide elective kendo and fencing courses for the 10th graders and electives fencing and archery courses for the 11th graders. 3. The implementation effectiveness: To fully implement elective mechanisms, to provide a wide range of elective courses, to understand the culture and characteristics of the school, to improve students’ school identificaiton, to establish the school brand, and to effectively implement school marketing. With the results of this case study, it provided suggestion for the case school to improve its physical elective featured curriculum and also be the reference for other senior high schools to develop physical education featured curriculum.
