Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) technique is almost applied on all Long-Term Evolution (LTE)/LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) devices and WiFi devices, which allows terminals to activate multiple sets of antennas to communicate with the antennas of the base station. MIMO significantly improves the data rate and/or the signal quality of a communication link. This results in much higher spectrum efficiency. However, devices have to consume great amount of energy when employing multiple sets of antennas at the same time, thus leading to a shorter battery life of LTE-A devices. This is a big problem for today’s battery-triggered mobile devices. Therefore, in this paper, we design a cross MAC-PHY layer energy-saving and Quality of Service (QoS)-guaranteed resource management framework for LTE-A/B4G uplink MIMO networks. The proposed design considers antenna allocation, transmit power control, physical radio resource allocation, modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection, and data delivery scheduling at the same time. In addition, user experience is an important issue. So our framework also takes the required QoS of mobile devices into account. Our design is compatible with the standards. Furthermore, considering the resource schedule period is only 1ms in the LTE/LTE-A network, the proposed mechanism is efficient in time. Extensive simulation results verify that the cross-layer frame-work significantly decreases the energy consumption of user devices, guarantees real-time traffic delays, and enhances radio resource utilization.
