Charles-Marie Widor(1844-1937) is one of the most representative French organists in the Late Romanticism period. He focused his whole life on the enrichment of organ music. Widor’s creative approach combined modern and traditional music. Suite for Flute and Piano, Op. 34 was a masterpiece completed in 1877, and was dedicated to the well-known flutist Paul Taffanel(1844-1908). This work not only contains beautiful sound, but also challenges the performer’s skills. The musical techniques used such as octave harmonies expansion, and doublings sound in the piano accompaniment capture’s the deep sounds and musical manners produced by an organ. From all these qualities, Suite for Flute and Piano, Op. 34 has been an influential piece since 19th century. The thesis is divided into two chapters: The first chapter introduces Widor’s life as well as his compositional styles. The second chapter provides an in-depth analysis on this work, and focuses on performing techniques.
