The Effect of English Online Video Learning Platform on Junior High School Students' English Learning Motivation

Due to the test-centered environment, students have to face the stress of entering the next grade school; the students lack the motivation to actively learn English. In order to increase students’ English learning motivation, teachers are now starting to utilize many different tools and teaching methods. Consequently, e-learning quickly became a popular learning and teaching way. One of the most common tools used in e-learning is multimedia. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of multimedia on increasing students’ English learning motivation. The research questions are: (1) What are the differences in students’ English learning motivation after using the English online learning platform? (2) What are the differences among different grades of junior high school students in their English learning motivation after using the English online learning platform? (3) What are the differences between high and low English proficiency students in English learning motivation after using the English online learning platform? The participants of this research were 5 second year and 7 third year junior high school students in Pingtung City. English learning motivation questionnaires, learning journals and semi-structured interviews were employed in this study. As for the results, in an overview of the participants’ English learning motivation, for six out of twelve junior high school students’ their learning motivation increased. Second year students’ learning motivation was higher than third year students’ learning motivation. High proficiency level students’ entire English learning motivation was higher than low proficiency level students’. The findings of this study illustrated that multimedia is a useful tool for students to learn English and to motivate their English learning. Teachers can provide homework for the students to learn extra knowledge and English after class; it can be a useful tool to arouse students’ learning desire and learning motivation; it can be a supplementary teaching tool to attract students’ attention and learning interest.
