Body Politics of Females Marriage Immigrants from Southeast Asian : A example in the midst of Hualien

The marriage of female immigrants from Southeast whose personal experiences and the agency of power relationship were emphasized and discussed in this study. In the view of body politics to analyze family’s intimate relationships and how to dominate the body. In the meanwhile, the strategy of survival can also be found from its agency. “Body politic” includes intimate relationship, fertility decision and housework. Field research were used in this study to have deep observation and interview 8 participants of female marriage immigrants from Southeast were included. Their language could clearly help them to convey their thought in the interview. The midst of Hualien was focused in the study. The results of this study are following: Firstly, in the dimension of “intimate relationship”, emotional relationship and sexual interaction, their explicit appearance (dressing, cosmetic and behavior) and intrinsic communicate interaction (like: language expression and thinking communication), were analyzed via Goffman’s dramaturgy. It is full of existing strategy and ways of doing things. They could find communication strategy between the relationship of each other. The agency could make the limits in the family become much flexible and gradually make changes. Secondly, in the dimension of “fertility decision”, in the early stage of patriarchal control, under the pressure of the expectation from husband’s family, later on, due to the elder age of husband and insufficient economic resource, they do need to have the space to negotiate. In addition, the husband who already had offspring may give the fertility decision for female marriage immigrants to decide. The choice of “give birth to or not” would connect the “stay or not stay” of female marriage immigrants. Thirdly, in the dimension of “housework and labor”, females’ marriage immigrants were in the process of have education, adaption, aging of husband and accumulation of human resource in Taiwan, from homemakers to supporters in the family, change their right of making decision and autonomy. Female marriage immigrants could gain much autonomy and promote their status in their family from changing their position between private and public spheres. This research mainly focus on female’s own body and work participation from the viewpoint of “body politic” to reflect their life experience. Indeed, the development of agency can be seen.
