Fast Coding Unit and Prediction Unit Decisions for HEVC Inter Prediction

High efficiency video coding (HEVC) has provided great improvements in coding efficiency. Compared to H.264/AVC, HEVC can achieve around 50% bit-rate reduction, which also can support higher resolution and multiple coding tools. The new coding structures such as coding unit (CU) and prediction unit (PU) have helped a lot, but the computational complexity is much higher than previous standards. For each frame, the HEVC encoder needs to perform each CU size and PU mode. In this thesis, we propose a fast algorithm combined with CU and PU early termination decisions to reduce computational demand. By using the depth information of neighboring Largest CU(LCU), we can decide which depths need to be performed in current LCU. As for PU mode decision, we utilize the rate-distortion cost and motion vector to reduce the coding complexity. Compared with HM 12.0 at the random-access configuration, our proposed method achieves an approximate 57% time saving on average, while the average BD-rate increase is only 0.43%. In addition, our fast algorithm outperforms the previous works for coding speed and coding performance.
