In this thesis modulation of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is achieved by controlling the spatial distribution of plastic nanoparticles. Ag nanoparticles of ~ 30nm are coated on one of two ITO glasses which composes of the cell. Different concentration of SiO2 nanoparticles are added in 0.32M 4-aminothiophenol (4ATP) aqueous solution to prepare the sample. 4ATP via electrostatic interactions can move its molecule to functionalized Ag nanoparticles. However, negatively charged SiO2 nanoparticles absorb on ITO glass can hinder 4ATP to adsorb on ITO glass, and that results the SERS signal can be modulated. SERS signal can be effectively switched by adding SiO2 with concentration larger than 0.27M in our study.
