The trend of aging population is overwhelming the whole world. It brings negative effects on politics, society and finance. The decrease of children and the rate of extended family have influenced the interaction among generations, which generates different value systems. A research has shown that intergenerational activities have great impacts on improving relationships among generations, prejudices and stereotypes. In another way, the interaction connects a family and strengths the bonds among family members. With the advance of digital games, a remote controller can be used as a handheld pointing device which detects movement in three dimensions. The new technology has offered a kind of games which features interaction and virtual reality in the process of playing. This study aims to intervene the interactions between the elderly and the children by using sensor-games, and we discussed the inter-communications between them in the intergenerational programs. This study adopted the quasi-experimental study design and convenience sampling was utilized to recruit 14 older adults (average age: 80.54) in the intergenerational group, 10 older adults (average age: 78.33) in the individual group and 9 older adults in the control group (average age: 82.22). The intergenerational group played somatosensory video games with the elementary students who were in middle grades (20 minutes twice a week for a period of 8 weeks). In another way, the individual group played somatosensory video games by themselves (20 minutes twice a week for a period of 8 weeks), and control group had no intervention. The results showed that (1) the intergenerational groups had significant improvements in attitude and group anxiety after the 8-week intervention (p < .05), (2) compared to the children in the intergenerational groups, the older adults with mild dementia in the intergenerational groups had significantly improved in social anxiety, social interactive attraction and intergenerational communication after the 8-week intervention (p < .05), (3) children in the intergenerational groups had significant decrease in the group anxiety, interpersonal attraction and intergenerational communication after the 8-week intervention, (4) eye-hand coordination and simple reaction of intergenerational groups were improved significantly after the 8-week intervention (p < .05). The study concluded that intergenerational somatosensory video game programs have positive effects on older adults with mild dementia, but children did not. Besides, somatosensory video games can improve the eye-hand coordination and simple reaction of older adults with mild dementia. Further studies are suggested to adjust different durations of the interventions and to collaborate with students in different levels of educational settings, such as elementary, junior and senior high schools or college nearby older institutions.
