Tan Yankai(1879-1930), the first Premier of the Republic of China and one of the four great calligraphers in the early Republic, was a scholar under the system of the imperial examination. Rather than being a scholar, he has devoted himself to revolution and education, responded to Sun Yatsen’s revolution, and concentrated his attention on youth education. Tan was good at writing a marvelous calligraphy in the regular script of Yan style. His poetic grace was also revealed in his poems written in the semi-cursive and cursive scripts. Moreover, Tan was diplomatic when dealing with people, and this made him a dominator in the early Republic. Chapter One of this study reveals the research motivation and purpose. Tan had a high political status in the early Republic because he excelled in poetry, calligraphy, and writing. However, most of the historical data record the biography in military and politics in all his life, only a few periodicals discuss his calligraphy achievement. This chapter tend to sort and classify the data, trying to find out the clues related to calligraphy. Chapter Two discusses Tan’s family background. The Tans passed on from generation to generation as a reputed academic family. Tan’s attitude and personality and calligraphic opinions are revealed in the poems and correspondence among Tan and his friends. Chapter Three mainly focuses on Tan’s backgrounds and views of calligraphy. The analysis of the social situations of calligraphy in the early Republic reveals the environments Tan was in. Moreover, Tan’s calligraphy origin and the issues of his poems and calligraphic works are discussed by analyzing the cultural relics donated by Tan’s two sons, Tan Boyu and Tan Chifu. Chapter Four analyzes Tan’s calligraphy style and characteristics of his writing works: based on Qian Nanyuan’s calligraphy, Tan’s copies of Magu Shan Xiantan Ji reveal his personal Kaisu style; Tan’s semi-cursive and cursive scripts styles are synthesized according to his correspondences and rhyming couplets. Finally, Chapter Five concludes the comments, position, and influences of Tan’s calligraphy, by investigating those people, including his brothers, inferiors, and children who were deeply influenced by Tan.
