Numerical study on the coastal changs of Dongsha Island under the impact of typhoon

The objective of this paper is to investigate the topographic change of the coast of Dongsha Islands, meanwhile, topographic scouring study was performed based on different paths of typhoons and related actions such as tide, wave and water currents. In this study, DHI hydro dynamic model was used to analyze and investigate the situation of coast of Dongsha Islands under the impact of typhoon. Moreover, MIKE 21 Hydro Dynamic (HD), Spectra Wave (SW) and Sediment Transport (ST) were used to simulate the influence of different paths of typhoons on coast environmental change scouring of Dongsha Islands. Meanwhile, the category 5, category 8 and category 9 of typhoon path classification used by Central Weather Bureau were adopted for simulation, from the simulation result, it can be seen that typhoon path and typhoon central distance will lead to different affected areas. Under the impact of category 5 Typhoon Usagi, the entire affect area is north coast and south coast and similar eroded phenomenon, however, in the offshore site of northeast coast, there is slight sedimentation; for the category 8 Typhoon Melor, since its influence is small, it shows slight sedimentation on the offshore site of the north coast; for the category 9 Typhoon Talim, generally speaking, it is eroded phenomenon in the near coast site, meanwhile, in the Lung-Pai-Wei offshore site of southeast coast, there is significant sedimentation.
