A Study of the Learning Efficiency on Picture Books Integrating into Environmental Education in Preschools

Popis: | 103 By adopting the method of action research, this study aims to probe into whether preschoolers' environmental cognition, attitudes and behavior were improved, and into the reflection and professional growth of teachers in teaching when an environmental education course regarding the issue of “protecting the environment, and cherishing resources” was planned and implemented in preschools with the media of picture books. The subjects of this study were 26 preschoolers of the kindergarten affiliated to an elementary school in which the author works at. Eight picture books with the concepts of protecting the environment and cherishing resources were selected to conduct eight-week instruction. The study analyzed data collected from lesson plans, the records of carrying out picture books instruction, the reflection and observation records of the author, the works and learning sheets of the preschoolers, feedback from parents, the questionnaire of environmental behavior, semi-structured interviews on environmental cognition and attitudes. The results of this study are as follows: I.Course and instructional design:The integration of picture books about environmental education and life experience inspires preschoolers' concern about the environment, the reading and discussion of picture books enhance their environmental cognition and attitudes, hands-on experience and the immediate application of extended activities in picture books urge the achievement of environmental goals, and the application of resources from parents and communities deepens preschoolers' learning experience. II.Learning outcomes:The course has enriched preschoolers' correct environmental cognition, built their positive environmental attitudes, and increased their environmental behavior. III.Reflection and professional growth:The action research has solved teachers' difficulties in teaching, and helped the growth of course planning and execution, and enhanced their abilities for multiple assessment. Last but not the least, the study proposes suggestions from the aspects of administrations, administration work at school, teachers' instruction and future researchers to serve as references for future researches.
