In this study, we investigated the effects of students’ levels, article categories and interface tppes on English reading performance, visual fatigue, and usability. Three factors design was the research method implemented in this study. In the experiment, the independent variables include article categories (literature, science, and magazines), types of interfaces (touched LCD, touch-tone e-paper, and plain paper), and students’ levels (junior high school students gifted in languages, and math/science, and non-gifted students). Dependent variables include accuracy, change in CFF, subjective visual fatigue, and usability. The results are as follow: (1)Article categories was significant on accuracy and subjective visual fatigue; In the study, the results indicated that the accuracy was better in science than those of in literature and magazine; and the accuracy was better in magazine than that of in literature. (2) Article categories and students’ levels were interactive in accuracy; (3) Students’ levels was significant on the accuracy, change in CFF, and subjective visual fatigue; the results indicated that the accuracy of language gifted students was better than the math/science gifted students and non-gifted students; the change in CFF of the math/science gifted students was better than the language gifted students and the non-gifted students; subjective visual fatigue of the language gifted students are better than the math/science students and non-gifted students; (4) Interfaces had significant influence on usability. The study indicated that the usability of plain paper is better than that of touched LCD and touch-tone e-paper. The results can provide the references for the design of interfaces and English reading materials in the future.
