The paper aims to analyze Japanese compound verbs and Chinese predicate-complement compound verbs on their semantic discourses, namely the periphery from referential directions to final destinations.A lexical item’ssemantic discourse has been considered a container in current studies. Therefore, in the following five chapters, the paper adopts the container schema in cognitive linguistics to observe how the containers— their semantic discourses— in Japanese “verb + komu” and Chinese “verb + jin/ru” complements have expanded. Chapter one introduces the paper’s research aim, purpose, methodology, and conceptual framework. Chapter two examines current studies on containers in cognitive linguistics and those appearing in Japanese “verb + komu” and Chinese “verb + jin/ru” complements. Chapter three first observes a container’s typical features, and its different ways of semantic expansion as a physical container or as an abstract container. Then, a comparison onthe two types of containers and their ways of semantic expansion in Japanese “verb + komu” complement and those in Chinese “verb + jin/ru” complement is further carried out. Based on chapter three’s comparison results, chapter four analyzes the polysemy phenomenon in Japanese “verb + komu” and Chinese “verb + jin/ru” complements, using different containers, namely different lexical items and theirsemantic discourses/expansion. The analysis finds that physical containers, according to their ways of expansion, can be further categorized into four types: “expansion into a situation,” “expansion into a field,” “expansion into a status,” and “expansion into a memory.” Chapter five presents this paper’s findings and provides some research suggestions for future studies.
