Many businesses have been taking austerity measures in recent years. The IT Department, regarded as a supportive role by businesses, tends to evaluate the necessity of IT investment with more care before investing in consideration of bringing down costs and gaining greater benefits at the same time. Consequently, resources management and cost control of information appliance is strictly enforced. Furthermore, quickly developed Green IT has also become one of the important strategies of environmental protection. Virtualization Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) integrates the user’s personal computer to make it work in Data Center, centralizing the management of personal computers in order to reduce the managerial complexity and improve the convenience of deployment for the manager. Besides, the great market penetration of mobile devices shifts the application of end users from the computer screens to the mobile devices. A research report of Computer Economics indicates that there are 20% of businesses in North America implement desktop virtualization. In addition, the survey of major investment item of software project in 2013, conducted by iThome Magazine, suggests the fact that there are over 50% of businesses in Taiwan plan to adopt the server virtualization, and the rate of desktop virtualization is up to 20.8%, too. After the technology of server virtualization is well developed, the businesses increasingly pay attention to desktop virtualization also. Therefore, this study aims to explore what is the factor that makes a business implement desktop virtualization infrastructure, and which characteristic of desktop virtualization appeals to a business, making the business adopt this service and providing it with pieces of advice when it comes across problems. The technology-organization-environment (TOE) framework is the underlying principle in this study, and there are three major factors discussed in the study, which are technology, organization, and environment, to be examined with a view to finding out their effects. This dissertation analyzes the relevant characteristics of desktop virtualization through interviews with many businesses, reaching the conclusion that the security of desktop virtualization as well as simplified management attracts businesses to adopt this service. Whether a business adopts desktop virtualization greatly depends on technology and organization factors.
