The study aims to investigate a phenomenon existing in the designers’ minds: "Void-solid Conversion" through protocol analyses. Furthermore, in terms of constructing the scenes of three spatial hierarchies, the basic operation moves of Solid-void Conversion are thus integrated into a feasible spatial design method. There are five phases in this study: 1.Related researches review and the observation of the phenomenon; 2.Analysis of basic operational moves in terms of a protocol analysis; 3.Composition of basic operational moves in three spatial hierarchies into a design method; 4.Feasibility verification of the design method in terms of analyzing an existing design case; 5.Feasibility verification of the design method in terms of executing a design project. The design method includes operations in three spatial hierarchies: architecture, interior and furniture. In the architecture level, the building masses are produced by reversing the exterior spaces; in interior level, the architectural elements are obtained by reversing the interior spaces; finally, in the furniture level, furniture is attained by reversing the furniture exterior spaces. The whole operation process repeatedly solidifies the voids and vacates the solids in mind, getting a set of spaces and masses eventually. The design operation of Void-solid Conversion prevails in designers' minds. After comprehending it, the designers can obtain a logic way of spatial design. Furthermore, once it becomes a design method, the designers can employ it as an operation tool of spatial design.
