Attentional control has been intensively investigated over the past decades. It is deeply involved in other cognitive functions, inhibitory control and visual short-term memory. With the improving stimulation techniques, it provides new approaches to revisit these issues from another perspective. This thesis explores the underlying neuronal mechanisms using a combination of behavioral and neuroimaging approaches, mainly direct current stimulation and electrophysiological recording. The first chapter will evaluate the role of attentional control in inhibitory control and visual short-term memory and describe the rational for the rest of this chapter. Chapter 2 and 3 will expand upon the concepts introduced in Chapter 1, but will elaborate on the fundamental neural mechanisms and how brain stimulation techniques can clarify the nature of visual short-term memory and inhibitory control. Each will provide evidence for and discussion of behavioral and neuronal mechanisms underlying inhibitory control and visual short-term memory. These discussions will be synthesized in the final general discussion and the opportunities for future research will be proposed.
