Applying Cartoons to Remedial Teaching of Functions of One Variable Summary This study aims to explore whether or not the application of cartoon to remedial teaching of functions of one variable is capable of elevating the understanding of students with lower mathematic achievement in learning the said functions as well as to instill a positive attitude toward mathematic learning. This study used different teaching methods to conduct its research, which divided twelve students of lower mathematic achievement into two groups. To avoid interference with student learning, the self-reading group utilized their lunch time, while the other teaching-intervened group made use of off-school time to carry out the remedial teaching of the seventh lesson. Conclusions of this study were as follows: 1. The application of cartoons to remedial teaching for functions of one variable is capable of elevating the understanding of students with lower mathematic achievement in learning such functions: (1) 75% of students progressed in the 7-a-01 section of Ability Indicator ; (2)58% of students progressed in the 7-a-02 section of Ability Indicator,; (3) 75% of students progressed in both sections of 7-a-04and 7-1-05 of Ability Indicator; (4) The average progress rate of students in the teaching-intervened group was 30% and 18.5% in the self-reading group; (5) Retention effect in the teaching-intervened group was better than that of the self-reading group. 2. Positive views held by students with lower learning achievement toward the application of cartoons to remedial teaching: (1) enhancing the extent of students’ preference for mathematics ; (2) stimulating students’ willingness to explore in self-learning; (3) assisting students' learning in mathematics. Recommendations: 1. Recommendation on teaching applications (1) first diagnosing the four fundamental arithmetic operations on negative numbers and then carrying out remediation; (2) encouraging teachers to integrate comics into teaching to enhance students' interest in learning; (3) teachers may use the situational contents of a cartoon story to arrange questions for teaching activities. 2. Suggestions for future research (1) Selecting subjects from different grades; (2) Expanding teaching materials to other topics. Key words:Cartoon, remedial teaching, functions of one variable
