Kouta shamisen music was evolved from the latest Kabuki shamisen music— Kiyomotobushi. The first Kouta in the world, is an Edo Kouta named " Chiruwauki ". It was created by the Second Kiyomoto-Enju-Dayu's daughter-- Kiyomoto-Oyou in 1855. In Edo Era, with the booming culture of Geisha and Gakai, politicians and businessmen often discuss about politics and business in a crowded room (with 4.5 tatami mats) in a Japanese-style restaurant as a fashionable style. Therefore, to appreciate and learn Kouta Shamisen music became a symbol of high social class. Kouta shamisen music was popular in both Edo Era and Meiji Era in red-light district. It emphasized more connotation and de-restriction of women culture in Taisho Era without previous political restriction in Meiji Era. In 1913, Kiyomoto-Oyou's student-- Horikotama, created the first Kuota Iemoto in Japan, called "Hori school", which is also the first recognized Kuota Iemoto by the Ministry of Culture of Japan. It keeps a good inheritance over a century with a competent Iemoto and teaching system. It also provide a model to propagate Japanese traditional culture of Kouta shamisen music. Because of invasion of modern western culture, young Japanese don't have much interest to learn Kouta shamisen music in becoming a student of an Imeto. The students are mostly the aged people in high social class. The population those appreciate and learn Kouta shamisen may decline in the future because of recent changes of values and life styles. Therefore, it may be a big impact to keep the tradition of Kouta shamisen music. This article will discuss about the principles and rules to keep the tradition of "Hori school". It may provide information about how "Hori school" keep their inheritance by his Iemeto system, and how social environment affected the tradition of "Hori school" Kouta shamisen music. This article will also discuss about Kouta shamisen music itself, its mentorship, its history of propagation, and how the social environment affected its propagation.
