Personality traits and leadership behaviors which basic-level managers should possess in power industry engineering department: A Case Study of Taiwan Power Company

Recently, the performance of state-owned enterprise is getting more concerned by public. From the results of the previous studies, superior’s leadership behaviors and personality traits will affect subordinates’ morale and satisfaction, which has positive correlation with enterprise’s performance. This study aims to understand the expected basic-level manager’s leadership behaviors and personality traits. As a case study, fifty (50) Taipower’s basic-level managers from some engineering department were invited to participate this study and to be interviewed. The relevant data were collected and classified twice by six(6) graduate students who major in human resource field. Finally, eleven (11) leadership behaviors and nine (9) personality traits for common dimensions were compiled. The results reveals “Listening, communicating and coordinating skills” is the most emphasized leadership behavior. The followings are “Set oneself as an example”, “Accountability”, “Good at delegation” and “Trust subordinates”. The most considered personality trait is “Friendliness” while the others in sequence are “With vision”, “With insight”, “Farseeing” and “With ambition”. For extended dimensions, four (4) leadership behavior and two (2) personality traits were recorded. “Fairness” is the most important leadership behavior while “Integrity” is the most important personality trait.
