A Study on the Career Decision-making among Elementary Nomadic Teachers

The purposes of this thesis were to understand elementary nomadic teachers’ career predicaments, to analyze the factors influencing their career choices, and to investigate their career decision-making processes. This thesis, adopting qualitative research interview as a research methodology, collects data by interviewing six elementary nomadic teachers. For comparisons, the interviewees are further divided into “those who are still pursuing a teaching career” and “those who have embarked on a new career path.” Significant findings of this research are as follows: 1. The career predicaments elementary nomadic teachers are facing include: (1) The teacher recruitment exams are particularly challenging and have a low admission rate; (2) There are questions and concerns about working as a substitute teacher; and (3) They are constantly haunted by a sense of uncertainty and fear of not having a promising future. 2. Factors that affect the elementary nomadic teachers’ career decisions can be classified broadly into two major categories: individual factors (such as age, personality, interests, work values, etc.) and environmental factors (such as attractive working conditions, the influence of close others, career frustration in the context, etc.). 3. The differences between “those who are still pursuing a teaching career” and “those who have embarked on a new career path” revealed in their career decision-making processes encompass: (1) different outcome expectations for substitute teaching; (2) different outcome expectations for preparing teacher recruitment exams; (3) differing career goals; (4) contrasting influence -- either as motivation or as dissuasion -- of the acknowledgement of the low acceptance rate in the teacher recruitment exams on career-related choices; and (5) varying amount of effort exerted into the pursuit of a teaching career -- which led to the nomadic teachers’ divergent attitudes toward achieving their career goals.
