With the rapid development of computer technology and the Internet, incorporating digital equipment and elements into teaching has become a trend. Digital storytelling is a new teaching technology that can be applied to multiple disciplines (Salpeter, 2005; Weis, Benmayor, O’Leary & Eynon, 2002). Much research on the connection between digital storytelling and digital literacy has been conducted (Li & Morehead, 2006; Robin, 2006; Sylvester & Greenidge, 2009). Further, researchers have shown that students’ engagement and learning motivation can be facilitated through digital storytelling (Pop, 2012; Sylvester & Greenidge, 2009; Yang & Wu, 2012). However, little research has focused on the link between digital storytelling and writing motivation. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of digital storytelling on university freshmen students’ digital literacy and writing motivation. The participants were 19 freshmen who are English majors in a university in central Taiwan. During the study, they were assigned to write digital stories in designated genres via the online writing platform Storybird. The quantitative data included pre- and post- questionnaires of digital literacy and writing motivation. An open-ended question survey was also conducted to gain insight into the participants’ perceptions of writing on Storybird. The researcher used paired-samples t-test to analyze the results from questionnaires by using SPSS 15.0 and applied coding methods to analyze the qualitative data. The results indicated that the participants’ digital literacy did not improve significantly at the end of the study. However, their language-based literacy, one of the four domains in questionnaire of digital literacy, was enhanced significantly. Further, their writing motivation and one of the five domains, writing self-efficacy, increased significantly. Additionally, their responses on the open-ended question survey showed positive attitudes toward writing on Storybird. These findings suggest that using online writing platforms in class may be an effective teaching strategy.
