Under the impact of global warming and climate change that could threaten the survival of human beings, the sea temperature is expected to rise for the next 10 years. If the sea temperature continues to rise, the intensity of rainstorms and the frequency of occurrence will keep to rise even though the climate mode remains unchanged. In order to investigate the influence of extreme rainfalls on the quality of the living environment in the metropolitan area, this study uses questionnaire sampling to collect date and analyzes them to explore and understand the impact of extreme rainfalls on the quality of the living environment. Also, this study explores the perception of people with different backgrounds towards extreme rainfalls and environmental pollutions. This study takes people living in Kaohsiung City and Pingtung City as the main research subjects. This study conducts a questionnaire survey and recovers a total of 360 valid questionnaires. The data are collected and analyzed based on frequencies, percentages, crosstabs, and Pearson chi-square test. The research results show that people living in those areas acquire their knowledge about meteorology mainly from the TV, radio and online information. Genders, places of residence, ages, education levels and occupations of people with different backgrounds exhibit significant influences on their perceptions towards the quality of their living environment. Meanwhile, people unanimously think the quality of water will significantly influence their living environments even though they have not experienced any extreme rainfall. People who have been through extreme rainfalls perceive economic impacts far more than people who have not been through extreme rainfalls. Based on the above findings, we recommend the researchers to further investigate the strategies and methods for constructing concepts of the impacts of natural disasters on the quality of the living environment so as to enhance the formation of correct concepts and reduce the chances of generating misperceptions.
