Saint-Saens is one of the characteristic composers of 19th century France. His most famous opera, "Samson and Delilah", is an essential part of mezzo soprano repertoire. This thesis analyzes an aria in act II, “Amour, Viens aider ma faiblesse,” and is divided into four chapters. The first chapter sets out the objective of the study and reviews the literature. Chapter two starts with an introduction of Saint-Saens’ life and style, continues with a discussion of the development of operas in France, and ends with the background of the composition and a synopsis of the opera. Chapter three is a form analysis of “Amour, Viens aider ma faiblesse,” and a comparison of performances by various singers. The last chapter concludes the study. C. W.
