Analysis of Meaning of Purpose Clauses 'youni' and 'tameni' in Japanese – A study on use of controlling ability –

| Popis: | 102 The purpose of this research is to argue the meanings of “youni” and “tameni” by using controlling ability. We will use the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ) as our database and then focus on the usage of “youni” and “tameni” when they come with verb, adjective with basic forms, and negative forms. The controlling ability in this research includes three concepts which are the coherence of actor between main clause and subordinate clause, the volitionality of predicate verbs, and the relationship of actor between main clause and subordinate clause. The results are as the followings: 1) “youni” and “tameni” with basic verb forms preceding If the state of subordinate clause can be controlled by the actor of main clause, we will use “tameni”; otherwise, we will use “youni”. The state that can be controlled is when the actor between main clause and subordinate clause are the same also the volitionality of predicate verb is higher. Moreover, under this state, we will use “youni” to expresses the actor of main clause is attempt to do something or being prepare for the coming states. On the other hand, if the state is not controllable, and when the actor between main clause and subordinate clause are the different, we will use “youni”; however, under this state, if we use “tameni” will mean the actor of main clause has the authority or ability to manage the actor of subordinate clause. 2) “youni” and “tameni” with adjective preceding According to the database, i-adjective is more widely used than na-adjective. Besides, Adjective with purpose clauses is often used to describe something in statement, which is in low controlling ability, so we will use “youni” in this state. 3) “youni” and “tameni” with negative forms preceding If the volitionality of predicate verb in subordinate clause is higher, and we use “tameni” to express will mean the actor of main clause can control the statement not to be happened. But if the statement which is not to be controlled by the actor of main clause, we will use “youni” instead. In addition, comparing with predicate verbs of subordinate clause of these two words, we show that “tameni” is used in extraordinary way to achieve the goal. |
