A Study of the Relationship between Self-determination Skills and Reading Achievement of Junior High School Students with Reading Disabilities

The purpose of this study was to explore the current situation and the relationship between the self-determination skills and the reading achievement of junior high school students with reading disabilities in Taichung City. A total of 105 students with reading disabilities attending resource room at public schools participated in this study. The Questionnaire of Junior High School Student Self-Determination(Chen, 2008)was applied. The results showed that the self-determination skills of the subjects were at middle level, and their reading achievements were low. Subjects of different background did not differ in their self-determination skills and reading achievements. Among the self-determination skills, only “Autonomy” skills could explain for the variances in the reading achievement effectively. Practical suggestions were provided based the results.
