Study of the Characteristics of an Optical Filter based on a Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Slab Waveguide Structure with Periodical Gold Rods

In this thesis, Crystal Wave software is used to simulate a proposed filter device on the two dimensional slab photonic crystal waveguide, where a series of periodical gold rods are placed. The TM-mode lights are launched into the filter structure to analyze the optical characteristics of the device. The structure of the slab is composed of four layer stacks, which are SiO2 substrate, Si layer, SiO2 layer, and the top Si layer. The photonic crystal structure is formed in terms of air rods. The optimum conditions for gold rods are analyzed as well in this study. By using the FDTD software, the band gap of the photonic crystal is calculated and the influence of the gold rods on the transmission spectrum is analyzed as well. By the simulation results, we conclude that such a proposed device is suitable for applying in optical communications.
