Three topics relevant to antenna design for compact wireless communication device operating in ISM bands are studied. The first part presents an internal antenna for wireless cameras used an in indoor environment. The goal is to develop a circuit-integrated internal antenna and save the layout space. A helical chip antenna configuration is used. Lump elements are also employed to get good impedance matching and to extend the operation bandwidth. According to measurement results, this antenna design can provide good performance for video data transmission. In the second part, a device-integrated antenna designed for wireless communication devices operating in the 902 to 928 MHz band is presented. The slot antenna is used because its radiation characteristic are not subjected to the presence of the device's metal enclosure. The antenna is printed on a flexible printed circuit board and integrated as a part of the metal case. In the third part, a dual-band antenna is proposed for the WLAN access point application. The antenna can be placed within the device due to its planar structure. The resonance in the low band is produced by a slot, which is formed by the ground plane and the high band inverted-F antenna. In order to implement the antenna for MIMO uses, four antennas are placed at corners of the test board to utilize spatial diversity and pattern diversity. Measured results indicate the proposed multiple antenna configuration is applicable to WLAN and has a good antenna diversity performance.
