The main purpose of this study is to analyze the beginning paragraph (meaning paragraphs) of texts edited in three versions of elementary Chinese textbooks (1 – 12 volumes) in accordance to Grade1 -9 Curriculum Guidelines: Nani, Kang Hsuan,Han- Lin. The text structures in this study focused on “description”, “exposition”, and“argumentation” articles, in which the content of beginning paragraphs was explored, compared and contrasted from each other. In reference to study methods, this study adopted “Documentary Analysis” to collect the relevant text. Next, “Content Analysis” was employed to analyze thebeginning paragraph structure from each text of different versions of Chinese textbooks. Finally, “Contrastive Analysis” was used to analyze and compare the variance among texts; then, providing conclusion and suggestion. It was found that the composing styles in first paragraphs are distributedunevenly: most seen composing style in the first paragraph of each text among three different textbook versions is “Liner Order”, accounting for 27%; the less seen style are “Connection” and “Quotation”, accounting for 2%. Suggesting that Chinesetextbooks editors should reconsider the proportion of first paragraph composing andre-arranging texts in which first paragraph composing styles conform to children’scognitive development to facilitate children’s learning. Secondly, comparing other “learning points” parts presented in the textbooks, first paragraph composing categories and styles were less described specifically inChinese textbooks. Therefore, it was recommended that “beginning paragraphcomposing” should be explained and described more specifically in Chinese textbooks to facilitate teachers’ instruction in texts exploration further, than improving learners’reading and writing ability simultaneously.
