With Cheng Ying-shu’s thirteen books as study objects, as well as fiction theme, narrative technique, and aesthetic style as three main points of the discourse, this thesis explores and discusses Cheng’s writing characteristics by interpreting her texts with postmodern perspectives and narratological theories. In fiction themes, Cheng Ying-shu’s postmodern philosophy is revealed in the absurdity of life, the deconstruction of gender, the dilemma of freewill, and the simulation of city, all of which are hidden in the rambling plots of her fictions. Seeing absurdity as the essence of life, Cheng dissolves the rationality-ruled society by irregular rhythm. The simulation of city describes the objectification as well as the qualitative changes of culture brought by the postmodern consumer society, presenting the colorful visual mirage with art language. For fiction techniques, this thesis describes how Cheng Ying-shu breaks the traditional storytelling skills by magical realism, fracture of time and space, fragment and collage, as well as meta and parody. Cheng’s surrealistic technique, including the magical realism and the fracture of time and space, leads to a lack of the sense of history. In additions, the grotesque plots between illusion and reality, as well as the spatial and temporal variability also add some mystique to her nonlinear stories. As for collage of fragments, meta-concept in fictions, and parody of different texts, whether putting comprehensive materials together and adapting them, or consciously interrupting the narratives with improvisation, she always tells her stories with humor and amusement. Finally, the thesis analyzes Cheng’s aesthetic style and discusses her unusual postmodern tone. While black humor is the most distinctive style in Cheng’s fictions, the incongruity between concept and form leads to an abnormal relief; meanwhile, the aesthetic violence dissipates the investigation of violence and brings the excitement, complex or coldness of superficial sense perception. To the plots and characters, as Cheng deliberately removes meaning by flatness and eliminates subjectivity by decadent and faceless characters, the meaning of texts and the image of characters become vague and light. Since Cheng Ying-shu’s works stand between serious literature and popular fiction, the serious elements are passed on to popularity, and the aesthetic ideas demonstrate the ongoing transformation of postmodernism.
