A Content Analysis on Concept of National Identity in All-out Defense Education textbook of senior high school

This study explored the concept and perspective of national identity in All-out defense education textbooks. This research analyzed the different versions of All-out defense education textbooks on the concept of national identity by content analysis. The concept of national identity was divided into three parts: ethnic identity, cultural identity, and system identity. There were six findings as below: First, all versions had lots of descriptions on the concept of national identity, especially in Youth publisher version. Besides, there were no significant differences on the description of national identity among all versions. Secondly, all versions presented the concept of system identity more times than ethnic identity. In addition, the concept of ethnic identity was showed more times than cultural identity. Thirdly, in all versions, the perception of survival territory was presented most times than others in the concept of ethnic identity. Technological achievement was illustrated most times in the concept of cultural identity. Political system was showed most times in the concept of system identity. Fourthly, about the concept of ethnic identity, the perceptions of role models and consanguinity had fewer descriptions than others in different versions. Also, the concept of cultural identity had fewer descriptions in all versions. Further, the perceptions of individual rights and multiculturalism in the concept of system identity had fewer descriptions in all textbooks. Fifthly, all versions demonstrated a positive description toward the concept of national identity especially in Youth version. All versions also showed fewer descriptions on national symbols, international relations, historical events, and political party politics. Moreover, All versions employed the concept of national consciousness instead of national identity. Lastly, in all versions, the concept of national identity was presented most times in the chapter of national policy. Yet, it was showed fewest times in the chapter of national defense.
