In addition, 4 participants comprising 2 adults with moderate intellectual disabilities and 2 supporters from the self-advocacy group participated in this study. This study was intended to examine the development and operation of the self-advocacy group, and the experience of 2 adults with moderate intellectual disabilities who participated in the self-advocacy group by conducting in-depth interviews, analysis of archival data, and simple observation. The major results and findings of this study are listed as follows: 1. Adults with intellectual disabilities in self-advocacy groups, who wish to assist other people with intellectual disabilities, can be self-advocates. These self-advocates can enhance their performance regarding self-advocacy by participating in meetings, activities, and various programs. 2. The 2 adults with moderate intellectual disabilities reported that they believed the experience of participating in a self-advocacy group produced positive effects and feelings for them. 3. The 2 participants with moderate intellectual disabilities required and obtained social support from the self-advocacy group. Among the various types of social support, informal support systems comprise families, and families provide instrumental support. In formal support systems, the 2 participants required supporters from the self-advocacy group to provide social support, instrumental support, information support, and emotional support. However, the 2 participants obtained emotional support, instrumental support, information support, and appraisal support from other self-advocates. 4. The 2 participants with moderate intellectual disabilities demonstrated favorable self-advocacy performance regarding their knowledge of self, knowledge of their rights, communication, and leadership. According to these results and findings, several suggestions are offered for people with intellectual disabilities, the families of people with intellectual disabilities, self-advocacy groups, and researchers conducting further study on this topic.
