The Early Stage Reaction of the Fe/Zn Interface

The specimens were prepared by electro plating Zn on Fe and then annealed at 400 and 450 ℃ for 240 and 300 s in air. The microstructure were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to analyze the intermetallic compounds. The results showed that Γ1-Fe3Zn10, Γ2 -Fe11Zn39, and δ-FeZn10 have formed. Another specimens was obtained by hot-dipping in Zn bath at 460 ℃for 3 s. Monoclinic ζ-FeZn13 phase was observed but there is no orientation relationship between ζ phase and Fe. Because iron is easily oxidized even at low-dew point, very thin (10-20 nm) iron oxide formed on the surface. The ζ phase was separated from the Fe substrate and therefore on orientation relationship was observed between them.
